Listening in..

When I was listening to a conversation, I noticed that one point leads to another, which leads to another, so quickly. This is basically a summary of the most interesting parts.

"How was Michelle's wedding last weekend?"

"It was nice, I liked her dress, the decorations were good, and same with the music."

"That's nice, I saw pictures of her dress on Facebook and I thought it suited her really well."

"Do you like 'Say Yes to the Dress?'"

"I watch that all the time on TLC."

"Some of the dresses are hideous like how do people think they look good in some of the dresses?"

"And some of them are so expensive like they aren’t worth it."

"It bothers me that the employees there think they are always right when telling the bride what to wear. Like it isn’t your opinion, if the bride doesn’t like it, the employee should be like ‘Okay, let’s try something else.’"

"Omg! I love the gay guys who work on that show! They’re actually the funniest part."

"I would want a gay guy to be my employee person if I ever went on that show."

"Did you hear about Carrie's uncle?"

"What?"

"He’s gay, and he has a family and everything. Like it affects Carrie's cousins and aunt and stuff. I don’t know what they are going to do."

"Wow! That’s actually so sad like I don’t know what I would do if that happened to me because that would like break my family apart."

  1. Hi
    What an odd conversation
This dialogue has the "talking heads" problem. Where are the interjections, the gestural pauses - what are they doing while they are having the conversation? "I watch that all the time on TLC" she said through a large mouthful of sandwhich,Or, "I watch that all the time on TLC" she said through the plexi glass window to the prisoner.

  2. Hey yo,

I agree with Russell but I think this has the potential to become an interesting conversation if you added some actions and not just dialogue.

    Great notes!

  3. It is funny how a conversation can start on one topic and then end up in a completely different place. It is funny enough how our thoughts lead us all around, but combine that with someone else's and we can really go anywhere! I understand that these are basically notes of what you overheard. Russ and Nicole are right--there are lots of things you could do to make a story out of this. So many big/dramatic issues here--weddings, homosexuality, reality television, fashion...the possibilities are endless!

  4. I like it the way it is right now! ahah
funny I actually laughed. I found it weird to listen to other peoples conversation because they werent interesting like yours!
It is funny how we start on one thing, move to the next and end up gossiping or telling people other peoples information without the person even asking..

  5. I thought it was interesting how the conversation changed from one topic to the next (from wedding, to a TV show, to gay guys). I agree with what everyone else said, I think a good story can be made out of topics that were discussed.
I found this line to be funny: "Some of the dresses are hideous like how do people think they look good in some of the dresses?" ...girls can be so judgemental! haha

  6. You're right about the way conversation jumps from one thought to the next. That's something to keep in mind in dialogue for stories, too.
